Bone Loss Occurs Immediately After Tooth Loss

Bone loss in the jaw bone is common when one or more teeth have been lost due to injury, decay, or trauma. Without the tooth in place to stimulate the jaw bone, the bone around the missing tooth will begin to deteriorate.

Bone loss occurs when the bone in your jaw and face begins to deteriorate after experiencing tooth loss. The process is progressive and begins immediately after losing your tooth! We are here to offer you a bone graft in Fort Walton Beach, FL.

Bone loss is common in patients who have been missing a single tooth or multiple teeth for a long time. The tooth root provides important stimulation to the jaw bone. Without teeth or dental implants, the bone around missing teeth will begin to degrade. Often, this will affect the structure of your face and limit Dr. Bartruff’s ability to place dental implants unless a bone graft is performed.

We offer three types of bone grafts: autogenous and allografts.

Autogenous grafts have the best success rate and lowest risk for infection. This type of graft takes bone material from a nonessential area of the patient, usually the chin, and places it in the area needing augmentation. An allograft uses human bone from a source other than the patient. Often, the bone is taken from a bone bank.

Your procedure will vary depending on the type of graft you are receiving. In all of the procedures, Dr. Bartruff will make an incision over the area where the bone needs to be augmented. In the case of an autogenous graft, a second surgical site will be required to extract bone for the augmentation. He will then fix the extra bone material to your jaw with titanium screws and seal the incision with stitches.

If you have experienced bone loss and are interested in dental implants, Dr. Bartruff may recommend a bone grafting procedure. Call our office in Fort Walton Beach, FL today to schedule your examination!
